Gaming laptop already nagging about space because modern games are enormous? You have good options, and gaming laptops are often friendlier to upgrade than slim ultrabooks.
The short version. A fast NVMe SSD is what you want, and many gaming laptops have a spare slot for a second one. That is the dream upgrade.
Let me run through it.
The table above shows the live NVMe prices on your marketplace for the internal upgrade.
Why NVMe, and how much
Games love fast storage, and they eat space fast.
A modern NVMe SSD loads games quickly and handles the asset streaming newer titles do. A good gen 4 NVMe is the sweet spot, with no need for pricey gen 5, as we explain in best storage setup for a gaming PC.
On capacity, 1TB is a sensible minimum and 2TB is comfortable, because a single big game can top 100GB. If you keep a lot installed, size up.
Option 1: add a second SSD
The best upgrade, if your laptop allows it.
Many gaming laptops, unlike thin ultrabooks, include a second M.2 slot. If yours does, adding a second NVMe SSD is the cleanest fix. Your original drive stays untouched, and you gain a big chunk of fast space for games.
Check your laptop’s manual or a teardown to confirm the spare slot. It is often the easiest, most rewarding upgrade a gaming laptop can get.
Option 2: upgrade the existing SSD
If there is only one slot.
Some gaming laptops, especially slimmer ones, have a single M.2 slot. In that case, replace the existing SSD with a larger one and clone or reinstall, which we cover in how to move Windows to a new SSD.
You lose the original drive but gain a single large fast drive, which is plenty for most.
Option 3: external storage for the library
The easy, no-opening route.
A fast external SSD plugged in over USB is great for your wider game library. Keep the games you are actively playing on the internal NVMe, and park the rest on the external, copying them back when you fancy them.
This avoids any teardown and gives you cheap extra space. An external hard drive works too for non-game bulk where speed matters less.
The bottom line
The best gaming laptop storage is a fast NVMe SSD, ideally with a second one added in a spare M.2 slot if your laptop has one. If not, upgrade to a larger single SSD or use a fast external SSD for your library.
Size for big games, 2TB if you keep a lot installed, skip gen 5, and use the live NVMe prices above to add space affordably. Then your gaming laptop has room for the whole collection, no constant uninstaling.
