Standing in front of a wall of hard drives wondering which to pick? Let me give you a simple checklist that cuts through it.
Five things matter, and only five. Get these right and you cannot really go wrong.
Capacity, price per TB, drive type, reliability, and a backup plan. That is the whole list.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace, which does most of the heavy lifting for you.
1. Capacity, with headroom
Start with how much space you need, then buy a bit more.
Storage use only ever grows, so a drive that fits today is full tomorrow. Buying one size up usually costs little extra and saves you upgrading again soon.
Not sure how much? We dig into that in how much storage do you actually need.
2. Price per TB, your value compass
This is the number that matters most.
Price per TB strips away capacity and tells you how much storage your money actually buys. It lets you compare a small cheap drive against a big pricey one fairly, and big drives usually win.
So sort by price per TB on the live table above and let it guide you. We explain the idea fully in what is a good price per TB right now.
3. The right type for the job
Match the drive to where it lives.
- For a desktop or general use, a standard drive is fine.
- For a NAS or array, choose a NAS or enterprise drive built for 24/7 use, and make sure it is a CMR model rather than SMR, which can crawl in arrays. We cover that in our guide to CMR, SMR and how we tag drives.
- For portability, pick the right size and form factor.
4. Reliability, in perspective
Do not lose sleep over brand.
Large-scale failure data shows the major brands are broadly similar, and reliability tracks the specific model and cooling more than the logo. We go deeper in are bigger hard drives less reliable.
So buy on value, cool your drives well, and do not pay a premium chasing a reliability myth.
5. A backup plan
The step people skip, and the one that saves them.
No drive is a backup by itself. Whatever you buy, keep your important data in more than one place, with one copy offsite.
Get this right and a dead drive is a shrug, not a disaster. See the 3-2-1 backup rule.
The bottom line
Choosing a hard drive comes down to five things: enough capacity with headroom, the best price per TB, the right type for the job, sensible expectations on reliability, and a real backup plan.
Run through that checklist, let the live price per TB table above point you to the best value, and you will buy the right drive with confidence every time. No spec-sheet overwhelm requird.
