Installed a shiny new drive, opened your file explorer, and it is nowhere to be seen? Do not panic. This is almost always normal.
A brand new drive arrives blank and uninitialised. The system has literally nothing to show yet.
It is not broken. It just needs a couple of minutes of setup. Here is how.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace, just in case the drive really is faulty and you want a replacement.
Why a new drive is invisible at first
This catches almost everyone, so let me explain.
A new drive ships with no partitions and no file system. It is a blank slab of storage with no structure on it.
Your file explorer only shows drives that are formatted and ready. So a raw, unformatted drive simply does not appear there, even though it is connected and working perfectly.
Nothing is wrong. The drive is just waiting for you to set it up.
The fix: initialise and format
This is the part that makes it appear, and it takes two minutes.
Open your operating system’s disk management tool. On Windows that is Disk Management, on a Mac it is Disk Utility, on Linux a tool like GParted.
In there, your new drive almost always shows up as unallocated or uninitialised space. From here:
- Initialise the disk if prompted.
- Create a new partition or volume on the unallocated space.
- Format it with a sensible file system.
Once that finishes, the drive pops up in your file explorer as a normal, usable drive. Job done.
If it does not appear even in disk management
If the disk tool cannot see it either, the problem is physical. Work through these.
- Check the data and power cables are firmly seated at both ends.
- Try a different cable and a different port.
- Inside a desktop, make sure the drive has power, listen for it spinning up.
- Test the drive on another computer if you can.
A drive that shows up nowhere, despite good cables and ports, on more than one machine, may genuinely be faulty.
When it is actually a dud
It happens occasionally. New drives can arrive dead.
If you have tried different cables, ports and another machine, and the drive is invisible everywhere, it is probably faulty.
That is what the warranty and return window are for. Send it back, and use the live prices above to line up a replacement.
The bottom line
A new drive not showing up is almost always just an uninitialised, unformatted drive doing exactly what it should. Open disk management, initialise, partition and format it, and it appears.
If it is invisible even there after checking cables and ports on another machine, it may be faulty, so return it and grab a replacement from the live prices above. Nine times out of ten though, it is a two minute fix and your drive was fine all along, no dramma.
