Set up a new drive and the installer asks if you want partitions? Let me save you some overthinking.
For most people, the answer is just leave it as one. Simpler, more flexible, less to manage.
Partitioning has real uses, but it is not the must-do ritual some people make it out to be, and it does not make your drive faster or safer.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace, because sometimes a second drive beats partitioning one.
What partitioning actually does
Quick plain-English version.
Partitioning splits one physical drive into two or more sections that the system treats as separate drives, each with its own letter or mount point.
It is purely a logical split. The data still all lives on the same physical disk. So a partition is organisation, not extra hardware.
That distinction matters for the big myth coming up.
What partitioning does not do
Let me clear up the two things people wrongly expect.
It does not make your drive faster. On an SSD, where data sits is irrelevant, so there is no speed benefit at all. On a hard drive there is a tiny theoretical edge, but you will never feel it.
And crucially, it does not protect you from drive failure. If the physical drive dies, every partition on it dies together. A partition is not a backup and not redundancy.
So do not partition expecting speed or safety. You get neither.
When partitioning genuinely helps
That said, there are real reasons to do it.
- Keeping your operating system separate from your files, so you can reinstall the system without touching your data.
- Dual booting two operating systems on one drive.
- Having a tidy, separate area as a backup target or for specific projects.
If one of those fits, partition away. It is a useful organisational tool when you actually want that separation.
When a second drive is better
Here is the honest alternative.
If your goal is to truly separate system and storage, a second physical drive does it better than partitions.
A separate drive gives real separation, and it survives the other drive failing. Partitions on one disk all share the same fate.
So if you care about that separation, check the live prices above. A cheap second drive is often the cleaner answer than slicing one drive up.
The bottom line
Most people are happiest leaving a drive as a single partition. It is simpler and more flexible, and partitioning adds no speed and no failure protection.
Partition if you specifically want to separate the system from files, dual boot, or keep a clear backup area. But if you want real separation, a second drive from the live prices above is usually the better, safer choise.
