This topic has plagued me at work. Ultimately, across a fleet of over 1,000 PCs with active databases just bashing away all day — drum roll — the SSDs lasted longer, with fewer faults. Yep, a win for SSD.
I have to say, the software was not optimised for longevity (is any software? By the time you’ve talked to three PMs and given the expected ready date six times, optimisation is, well, not a priority). It was writing logs all over the place, data flowed into the database about 20 hours a day, and we ran maintenance jobs in the quiet period. What I’m saying is: SSDs won in this situation — essentially a trickle of data, non-stop.
Having said that, when an SSD fails, it’s gone. That’s it. GONE. You’re getting nothing on or off it. With HDDs we had weeks or months of warnings before having to do anything urgent.

What TBW actually means
You will see a spec called TBW. It sounds scary. It is not.
TBW stands for Terabytes Written. It is the total amount of data the manufacturer guarantees you can write to the drive before wear becomes a concern.
A typical 1TB consumer SSD is rated for hundreds of TBW.
Hundreds of terabytes. Of writes. Before it even reaches the warranty limit.
Why you will probably never hit it
Here is the maths that ends the worry.
Most people write a handful of gigabytes a day. Browsing, documents, the odd game install, some photos. Call it generous and say twenty or thirty gigabytes daily.
At that rate, chewing through hundreds of TBW takes well over a decade. Often two.
Your drive will be hilariously obsolete long before it is worn out. You will replace it for a bigger, faster one, not a dead one.
When endurance does matter
I will be fair, because there are real exceptions.
- Heavy video editing with huge scratch files written constantly.
- Databases and servers hammering writes all day.
- Crypto or chia style workloads that abuse drives on purpose.
If that is you, look at higher endurance or enterprise drives and pay attention to TBW. For everyone else, it is a non issue.
The thing that actually kills SSDs
Plot twist. When SSDs do die, it is usually not write wear at all.
It is the controller or a firmware fault failing suddenly, the same way any electronics can.
That matters because it means an SSD can fail without warning, unlike a hard drive that often gets noisy first.
So the lesson is not “baby your writes”. The lesson is “keep a backup”, because sudden death is the real risk.
How to actually look after an SSD
Simple, low effort, done.
- Keep a backup, since SSD failure tends to be abrupt.
- Leave some free space, which helps the drive manage wear.
- Do not obsess over writes for normal use.
- Upgrade for capacity or speed using the live table above, not out of wear out fear.
The bottom line
SSDs last a long time. For ordinary use you will retire yours for being small or slow long before TBW ever becomes relevant.
Watch endurance only if you do genuinely heavy write work. Otherwise, keep a backup for the rare sudden failure, ignore the wear out myth, and upgrade when you want more space using the live prices above. Your SSD is tougher than the internet wants you to believe.
